What is slimbrowse good for ?
In case you are paying a fee based on the amount of data you transfere, which is typical for mobile internet connections, like 3G or GPRS or UMTS or CDMA OR when using a dial up connection via modem. You will immediately reduce the monthly bill from Your ISP because of less traffic consumption.
In case You have an “Unlimited Rate”, You might choose another tariff with a slower speed and lower costs, without sacrificing reponse times.
In case of a narrowband connection (e.g. dialup modem) You will enjoy faster response times. And because You will get Your work done faster You will also save on connection-time and costs.
For which type of traffic slimbrowse can be used ?
Only HTTP traffic is reduced when using slimbrowse. So only web browsing will be affected.
How does slimbrowse work ?
When the web-browser requests a web-page, this request is forwarded to the slimbrowse server.
From there, the request for the page is sent to the target host. Its response, the requested web-page, is compressed on the slimbrowse server and forwarded to the clients web-browse and uncompressed.
slimbrowse also performs reduction of graphics ("lossy" graphics compression) for downloaded graphics files, which significantly reduces the amount of traffic. Have a look at the Home page to see these effects.
So called "Animated GIFs", which are like short movies and mostly used for advertisements, are blocked and only the first frame (picture) is downloaded.
The removal of advertisements form the data stream sent to the clients browser reduces the amount of traffic even further. In contrast to some well known ad-blockers, which are browser based, slimbrowse does not simply hide the advertisements, but prevents them from being downloaded completely.
As a courtesy to the user, slimbrowse checks all the links, the clients web-browser wants to access, for being "safe". Because this action is performed on the slimbrowse server, first of all this checking is faster compared to the same process in the browser, and second, the client PC does not need to do regular downloads of updates for the safe browsing, implemented within the browser. So this also achieves further redcution of downloaded data.
How is slimbrowse implemented ?
slimbrowse uses various open source components, which
are secure and reliable.
Because slimbrowse is implemented as a proxy server,
every browser, which is capable to use a proxy server, can use
slimbrowse without the need of special software on the client PC.
